Safety in nail art – Protect yourself and your clients properly

The use of nail products, such as gels, structure gels, and nail decorations always involves responsibility for the safety of both the artist and the client.

Finnails.com wants to be involved in ensuring that nail work is safe for all parties involved.

Our imported NAILS Cosmetics and HeyLove ranges offer high-quality products whose safety meets the strictest EU standards. In addition, all our products are registered in the European Cosmetics Register (CPNP), which guarantees their safety and compliance with legislation. In this article, we focus on the most important guidelines that will help you protect yourself and your customers.

1. Acrylates and their safe handling

Acrylates are an important part of nail products, but their misuse can cause allergies and skin irritation. Therefore, it is extremely important to follow the following safety practices and work safely with acrylates:

- Uncured acrylics should never be allowed to come into contact with the skin. Acrylic-based products, such as gels and primers, should only be applied to healthy nails. Any product that gets on the skin should be wiped off immediately. So, apply the products carefully and far enough away from the nail bed. It is a good idea for beginners to leave more safety space at the nail bed until they gain more skills.

- Avoid working with bare hands. Always wear nitrile gloves or other protective gloves suitable for acrylates, including when handling products or their packaging. Uncured acrylate can always cause allergies.

- Do not use products on diseased or infected nails. Nail services should always be performed on healthy nails. Acrylics can make the situation worse, and you don't want to spread infections from one nail to another.

2. Protect yourself – Hygiene and protective equipment

At Finnails, we want you to be able to work on your nails for as long as possible!

Nail art exposes you to not only acrylics but also various dusts and fumes. We care about you, so please remember to protect yourself well. Here's how to protect yourself in the best possible way:

- Wear a respirator. A respirator with at least FFP3 classification is recommended to protect against dust and fumes generated during filing and product use. Even if uncured gels do not actually emit an odor or fragrance, they do emit fumes that you should protect yourself from.

- Ensure good ventilation. Good ventilation is necessary when working with nails. If necessary, use an effective air purifier to reduce harmful substances in the work area or a spot extractor. An effective table vacuum cleaner is also important!

3. Take care of your work environment and equipment

A hygienic work environment and quality tools are the cornerstones of nail safety. Remember these:

- Sterilize equipment regularly. Use an autoclave, chemical sterilization, or hot air sterilizer to ensure all equipment is clean. It is also a good idea to wipe down all surfaces with a disinfectant between each client.

- Use a high-quality nail oven. Make sure that the oven is powerful enough and cures the gels reliably, as uncured gels can cause allergic reactions.

4. Tips for protecting customers

The safety of the customer is just as important as the safety of the creator. Here are a few tips:

- Inform the customer about the risk of allergies. Tell the customer that nail products are designed for healthy nails only and that possible skin or nail reactions should be taken into account.

- Disinfect hands and nails carefully. Before working, the client's nails and hands should be cleaned to remove any possible contaminants.

- Avoid filing too hard. Incorrect or too rough a filing technique can damage the surface of the natural nail and increase the risk of allergies or infections. A rough-filed natural nail is also not an optimal base for nail products, which will affect the durability of the nails.
